When Are Vehicle Registration Fees Deductible
The IRS classifies vehicle registration fees as personal property tax. Namely, a state or local tax charged on personal property, based on the value of the personal property. This fee is deductible in certain circumstances but you cant just deduct the total amount of the fee.
Instead, the vehicle registration fee should be calculated as a percentage of the cars value. Higher value cars with higher registration fees can thus garner a higher value deduction. Drivers license fees and penalty fees imposed for late registration are not eligible for deduction.
Different states assess vehicle registration fees based on different factors. You can only deduct the car registration fee if its based on value, not car weight. If your fee takes both into account, you can deduct the part related to value.
Medical And Dental Expenses
Line 1: Enter medical and dental expenses as allowed on federal form 1040, Schedule A, line 1, less the amount reported as health insurance on line 18 of the IA 1040. 100% of the amount paid for health insurance premiums paid for with post-tax dollars is deductible on line 18 of the IA 1040. It may be to your advantage to take this deduction on line 18 of the IA 1040 instead of the Iowa Schedule A. If health insurance premiums were used as a deduction on line 18 of the IA 1040, they cannot be used on the Iowa Schedule A.
The Iowa 1040 departs from the federal 1040 in the treatment of health insurance premiums by allowing taxpayers to elect to deduct qualifying health insurance premiums as an adjustment to Iowa gross income. The Iowa return allows a deduction for qualifying health insurance premiums on line 18 of the IA 1040, rather than reporting those same premiums as a medical expense deduction on the Iowa Schedule A for Iowa Itemized Deductions.
If the health insurance deduction is taken on the Iowa Schedule A, then the federal tax guidance should be followed when addressing the complications due to the impact of the federal excess advance premium tax credit repayment and the net premium tax credit.

Luckily, there are two IRS-approved methods for deducting car expenses: actual car operating expenses and the standard mileage rate. You can find both deductions on your Schedule C, used for reporting business expenses.
You’ll have to choose between the two methods, since you can’t use both at once.

If you use a vehicle as part of your business operations, such as to deliver products or drive to worksites, your company may be eligible for certain tax deductions. But there are a few important details to consider so you know what you can include, when you can do it, and how to write off these expenses.
Driving Home A Tax Break
You pay a sales tax on your car when you buy it. Some states continue to tax you each year for, as Kentucky puts it, the privilege of using a motor vehicle upon the public highways. Most states also send out a notice to demand their tax payment to register your car each year. After you slap your new decal on your car, you may be able to file the receipt and add that payment to your deductions for personal property taxes in April.
If your state calculates a percentage of the vehicle registration based on the value of your car, you can deduct that percentage as part of your personal property taxes. The percentage of the vehicle registration based on the weight of your car is not tax-deductible. For example, in New Hampshire, a portion of car registration is deductible and a portion is not deductible .
The same goes for an RV or boatcheck the registration paperwork to see if you are paying property taxes on those, too, and keep in mind the $10,000 cap on total SALT taxes.

State And Local Real Estate Taxes
Deductible real estate taxes are generally any state or local taxes on real property levied for the general public welfare. The charge must be uniform against all real property in the jurisdiction at a like rate.
There are popular loan programs that finance energy saving improvements through government-approved programs. You sign up for a home energy system loan and use the proceeds to make energy improvements to your home. In some programs, the loan is secured by a lien on your home and appears as a special assessment or special tax on your real estate property tax bill over the period of the loan. The payments on these loans may appear to be deductible real estate taxes however, they’re not deductible real estate taxes. Assessments or taxes associated with a specific improvement benefitting one home aren’t deductible. However, the interest portion of your payment may be deductible as home mortgage interest. Refer to Publication 936, Home Mortgage Interest Deduction and Can I Deduct My Mortgage-Related Expenses? to see whether you might qualify for a home mortgage interest expense deduction.
If a portion of your monthly mortgage payment goes into an escrow account, and periodically the lender pays your real estate taxes out of the account to the local government, don’t deduct the amount paid into the escrow account. Only deduct the amount actually paid out of the escrow account during the year to the taxing authority.

Personal property taxes go on line 5c of Schedule A. The total of your itemized deductions on the schedule is then entered on line 12a of the 2021 Form 1040, which you’ll file in tax season 2022, in lieu of the standard deduction.

The Itemized State And Local Tax Deduction
The TCJA made another big change as well. The state and local tax itemized deductions that these fees fall into are capped at $10,000. It’s $5,000 if you’re married and file a separate return.
So that $60 can’t be claimed because it’s over the $10,000 limit if you paid $10,000 in other qualifying taxes and your total comes out to $10,060 when you include the tax portion of your vehicle registration fee. All your state and local taxes would be deductible if they added up to $9,060 because it comes in under the cap.
What Vehicles Qualify For Tax Deductions
You may qualify to deduct some of your vehicle-related expenses if you use your car for business purposes. The IRS defines a car as any four-wheeled vehicleincluding a truck or vanintended for use on public streets, roads, and highways. It mustn’t exceed 6,000 pounds in unloaded gross weight. Exceptions include ambulances, hearses, vehicles used to transport people or property for money or hire, or trucks or vans that are qualified nonpersonal use vehicles.
You can take this tax deduction in a few different ways, from the standard mileage rate and actual car expenses to the Section 179 deduction. However, if you use your car for both business and personal driving, you must split the expenses based on your actual mileage.

Itemizing Vs The Standard Deduction
It can be worth the trouble of claiming this deduction if you have a lot of itemized deductions, enough so that their total exceeds the value of the standard deduction available for your filing status. But this became more of a reach in 2018 with the passage of the TCJA.
Your standard deduction as a single taxpayer would be $12,950 for the tax year 2022, up from $12,550 in 2021. It will take a lot of itemized deductions to exceed these amounts. You can’t both itemize and claim the standard deduction for your filing status, too. It’s one or the other, so it makes more sense to take the option that reduces your taxable income the most.
