Flyers who don’t want to pay $18 a day for long-term parking at the San Francisco International Airport will have an option, starting in August, to park their cars for free, courtesy of startup RelayRides Inc.
When the owners return, their gas tank will be full and the car will be washed. The catch? RelayRides will be able to rent out the car. For the renters, said Steve Webb, spokesman for RelayRides, the rental fees will be about 40% cheaper than standard.
The move, small for now–the first parking lot will have space for just 30 cars–is a new twist in the car-rental business. Major car-rental companies have already seen competing service offers from startups such as FlightCar Inc. and SilverCar Inc., focused on making car rental at airports, specifically, more convenient, as well as from peer-to-peer car-rental companies like RelayRides in general.
Free long-term parking, meanwhile, could be a worrisome development to government-run and private airport parking lot operators. Parking and ground transportation provide about $2.9 billion in revenue annually to airports in the U.S. and Canada, according to a recent survey.
RelayRides is also considering launching similar service at major airports such as Newark Liberty International, Los Angeles International and Chicago O’Hare, said Mr. Webb, depending on how the SFO trial goes.
