Car Insurance Refund Checks 2021

Is There A Fee For Canceling Car Insurance

Auto insurance refund checks will start arriving this week

A fee can be charged if you choose to cancel your car insurance, but it’s up to the insurance company. A good customer who had held the same policy for a long time is less likely to face a fee than someone who just signed up for the policy a few weeks ago. If a fee is charged, it will be subtracted from your refund amount if any is due. Check with your insurance carrier about cancellation fees.

State Orders New Car Insurance Stimulus Checks Are You Due Another Refund

While Washington stopped entertaining the idea of a fourth stimulus check, advocates and at least one state are still pushing car insurance companies to hand you some COVID-19 cash.

Some insurers paid discounts and rebates to policyholders when they reaped soaring profits as Americans stayed home more during the Great Driving Slowdown in 2020. Yet government officials, advocacy groups and a class-action lawsuit argue it wasnt nearly enough.

If you’re paying full price, here’s how you might get another discount from your insurer plus some other strategies to slash your monthly bill.

Getting A Refund For Paying In Full Vs Installments

One thing that can impact your refund is whether you’ve opted to pay for your insurance in installments or in a lump sum. Many insurers give you a cheaper rate if you pay the full amount of a six-month or one-year policy all at once.

If you opt for a lump payment, keep a possible cancellation in mind. You’ll still be eligible for a refund, just remember that by paying in full, you’re entrusting your insurer with more of your money. If you’re signing up for insurance and think you may need to cancel mid-policy, weigh that against the difficulty of getting your money back.

How To Avoid Getting Scammed

The BBBs tips for avoiding a scam:

  • If you are contacted, stay calm and dont act immediately, no matter how dramatic the story is.
  • Dont respond to unknown calls, texts or emails. If you think the message may be real, contact your insurance provider directly.
  • Be on the lookout for look-alikes. Scammers hide behind well-known names and often spoof existing company names, websites and caller IDs. Call your insurer directly if you think that is necessary.

How Should I Cancel My Auto Insurance Policy

If you’re going to cancel your existing policy and you plan to continue driving, don’t cancel your old policy until you find a new one. When you have the effective date of your new policy, you can ask your current insurer to cancel your existing policy effective the first day of your new policy.

It’s essential that there are no gaps in your coverage because even a small one could create problems. If your car is stolen, damaged, or involved in an accident while you’re uninsured, you could be responsible for repairs and medical bills. Any gaps in coverage could also raise your insurance rates, even if it’s just for a day.

Car Insurance Refund Checks Are Being Issued Too Soon

Major Auto Insurance Companies / Car Insurance Calculator 2021 ...

While I want to see families continue to benefit from the changes to our laws, I worry the rush to issue this refund could have serious consequences for people living with severe injuries from catastrophic car accidents.

I was proud to vote for car insurance reform in 2019. The changes we made give Michigan drivers the freedom to choose the level of insurance coverage that makes sense for them and lowered the cost of insurance throughout the state by implementing common-sense measures to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse.

Once the most expensive state for auto insurance, our state no longer holds that position. Michigans rates have declined by 27% since our reforms took effect, according to a national study. More than 100,000 uninsured drivers have now purchased coverage. Competition has increased, with 37 new companies offering auto insurance in our state. And the per-vehicle fee Michigan drivers pay into the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association fund has dropped from $220 in 2019 to $86 per vehicle for the current 12-month period.

Unfortunately, the reforms have also had unintended consequences on care for some people with catastrophic injuries from car accidents.

I am advocating for a solution that will help these caretakers stay in business and ensure car crash victims have the care they need. I am convinced that Michiganders want those who deserve quality long-term care to receive it.

Auto Insurance Refunds On The Way

Thanks to Michigans historic, bipartisan auto insurance reform law passed by the Michigan Legislature and signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2019, Michigan drivers will soon receive $400 per-vehicle refunds from their auto insurance companies, according to the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services.

The refunds are due to cost savings in the new auto insurance law, which has resulted in a $5 billion surplus in the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association catastrophic fund. Michigan lawmakers called on the MCCA to return the maximum amount of surplus funds to Michiganders with auto insurance while ensuring continuity of care for the injured, and in late 2021, the MCCA authorized a $3 billion refund to drivers.

Anyone who had a vehicle, motorcycle, or RV that was covered by a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements to operate on Michigan roads as of 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2021 is eligible to receive a refund for that vehicle. Historical vehicles are eligible for a refund of $80 per historical vehicle.

Insured motorists do not have to do anything in order to receive their refund. Insurers will issue refunds to eligible drivers automatically via check or ACH deposit by May 9.

LANSING Michigan has begun its rollout of $400 per-vehicle refunds to insured drivers, with checks arriving no later than May 9, the Whitmer administration announced Friday.

You’ve Chosen To Cancel Your Car Insurance Policy

One of the most common scenarios in which you can get a car insurance refund is if you’ve decided to cancel your policy in the middle of your term. You may have found a better rate elsewhere, are selling your car or are moving to another state or country. In general, you’ll be eligible to receive most or all of your unused premium.

Should I cancel my insurance policy?

Cancelling your insurance policy can result in higher rates in the long run if you don’t have another policy in effect. This is because insurers see lapses in coverage as indicative of higher risk.

We only recommend cancelling your insurance policy if:

  • You’ve already bought a policy at another insurer
  • You’re getting rid of your car completely
  • You’re moving out of the country

Whether insurers require you to pay a cancellation fee depends on their rules, as well as on state law. For example, South Carolina allows insurers to charge a $20 fee at the beginning of the term, which is generally not refunded. You’ll need to contact your insurer directly to be sure of what you’re entitled to.

Some insurers, like State Farm, Progressive and Geico, state on their websites that they don’t charge a cancellation fee.

For example, suppose your annual insurance bill is $1,200 and you’ve paid the entire sum up front. You decide to cancel after four months. If your insurer divides the cost of your policy evenly over the year, you’d get $800 back.

Can You Get A Refund On Car Insurance

Online Auto Insurance Renewal

Your insurance company may issue a refund if your policy is canceled, and you’ve paid your premium in advance. Receiving an insurance refund will largely depend on why you’re canceling the policy and how much of the premium you paid in advance. If you pay your full premium upfront, then you’ll typically get a refund when you cancel your policy. If you pay your premium monthly, then you may or may not get a refund depending on when you cancel.
